The Challenge

Trust remains one of the biggest barriers to digital transactions in the Nigerian market. Buyers worry about paying for goods they never receive; sellers worry about chargebacks and fraud. Xedla needed a payment platform that could sit between both parties and guarantee a fair outcome, while also offering the everyday financial tools that would keep users coming back.

The platform had to handle escrow payments with proper dispute resolution, issue virtual cards for online purchases, process utility and bill payments, and allow instant account creation using BVN verification. All of this needed bank-level security without the friction that typically comes with it. The user experience had to be straightforward enough for first-time digital payment users, yet robust enough for power users processing multiple transactions daily.

Xedla also needed a marketing website that clearly communicated the platform's value proposition and drove app downloads across both iOS and Android.

Our Approach

We built both the public-facing marketing website and the core mobile application. The app was developed using React Native, allowing us to ship on iOS and Android from a single codebase without compromising on native performance or platform conventions.

The escrow payment system was the centrepiece of the technical architecture. We designed a transaction flow where funds are held securely until both parties confirm satisfaction, with clear status tracking, automated notifications, and a structured dispute resolution process. The virtual card issuance feature connects to banking APIs to generate cards on demand, giving users a secure way to shop online without exposing their primary account details.

For onboarding, we implemented instant BVN-based account opening that gets users from download to their first transaction in minutes rather than days. The cashback rewards system was built to incentivise early adoption and repeat usage. Throughout development, we prioritised transparent pricing, every fee is shown upfront, with no hidden charges.

The Results

Xedla launched on both the App Store and Google Play, providing users with a reliable and secure option for everyday financial transactions. The escrow system has been the key differentiator, building genuine trust between buyers and sellers in a market where that trust is hard-earned.

The instant account opening flow, requiring only a BVN, removed the barriers that typically prevent adoption of new financial platforms. Users no longer need to visit a branch, submit paperwork, or wait days for verification. The combination of escrow protection, virtual cards, and bill payments has positioned Xedla as a versatile financial tool rather than a single-purpose app.
